Evelyn Arline McCormick Bates, 82, went to be with the Lord Sunday, April 15, 2012. Mrs. Bates was born in Anawalt, WV and lived most of her life in Abingdon, VA. Arline loved to bowl and bowled with many leagues. Arline also enjoyed reading, listening to radio shows on the weekends, and taking road trips.
Ms. Bates loved her feline companions, Missy and Wendy, whom she cared for for many years. She is preceded in death by her grandparents, Bill and Florence McCraken; parents, Frank and Roxie McCormick; husband, Martin Van Bates, and sister, Della Mae Arnold.
She is survived by her two sisters, Dorothy Ashley of Bristol, VA and Christine Pare of Bristol, TN, and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by a dear and loving friend who Arline thought of as her daughter, Carol Barr of Glade Springs, VA.
Arline was a kind and loving person and will be missed by all those who knew and loved her.
Graveside services will be held 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Charlie Burke, Scottie Ashley, Anthony Roe, Mike Arnold, Denny Ashley and Marty Kiser.
Visitation with the family will be 6-8 P.M. Tuesday at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. Those wishing to travel in procession to the cemetery are asked to meet at the funeral home by 12:30 P.M. Wednesday.
