Ezra Olen "Slick" Greer departed this life on March 24, 2013 at his home in Abingdon, VA. He was married for almost 68 years to Jean Carter Greer. Ezra and Jean met as teenagers while both living in White Top, VA. Together they had a daughter, Carla Greer Proffitt of Abingdon, VA. Slick served in the United States Navy during World War II and later became an entrepreneur, owning several businesses before retiring as an engineer from Brunswick Inc. in 1988. Most importantly, he was a devoted Christian and faithfully attended St. John Lutheran Church in Abingdon, VA.
In addition to his wife and daughter, Ezra is survived by his son-in-law, Herb Proffitt of Abingdon, VA; his granddaughter, Amber Proffitt Tran of California, MD, her husband Mike Tran and daughter Abigail Tran; granddaughter, Celita Proffitt of Columbia, SC and her fianc? Kenny Hastie; two sisters-in-law, Sue Allen of Bristol, VA and Blanche Greer of Hollywood, MD; a special relative, Sandra R. Marchman; and numerous nieces and nephews that he also loved dearly.
Ezra is preceded in death by his parents, William A. Greer and Hester B. Greer; two brothers, Aaron Greer and Russ Greer; two sisters, Stella Price and Katie Reedy; sister-in-law Anne Emerson; a special nephew, Charles "Bill" Greer; and a special niece, Frieda Price Dolinger.
The family would like to extend their special appreciation to Dr. Martin Monahan.
Visitation with the family will be held on Wednesday, March 27, 2013 from 4:00pm - 6:00 p.m. at St. John Lutheran Church. A funeral service will be held at 6:00 p.m., Wednesday at the church with Pastor Scott Homesley and Pastor Kent Peterson officiating. A committal service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, March 28th at Forest Hills Memory Gardens where Ed Greer, Paul Greer, Ricky Greer, Tony Greer, Roger Proffitt, and David Stout will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Joe Emerson, Ira Price, Olen Price, Buddy Reedy, Andy Stout, Ricky Weaver, and Roger Weaver.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Ezra's name be given to St. John Lutheran Church, 807 East Main Street, Abingdon, VA 24210.
