Frank Lamon Golightly, 84, of Fredericksburg, Virginia passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 2, 2011, at Mary Washington Hospital.

He was born on June 24, 1926 in Hacket, Arkansas, to Rube and Flora Gartrell Golightly.

Preceded in death in 2009 by his wife, Sylvia Duncan Golightly, he is survived by two step-children, Monecia Helton Taylor of Fredericksburg and William Helton and his wife Karen of Raleigh, NC; four step-grandchildren and spouses, Mollie and Rob Rixmann of Manassas, Sarah and Matt Phillips of Raleigh, NC, William Helton of Harrisonburg, and Thomas Naggs of Odenton, MD, Courtney Scullin and her husband Andrew of Brooklyn Park, MN, Amanda-Hunter Taylor of Roanoke, VA, Montgomery Taylor of Salem, VA, Travis Taylor of Tappahannock, VA. He is also survived by six great grandchildren.

In addition, he is survived by many nieces and nephews including Pat Berry, of Waldron, AR; Judy Golightly Beihl of Ocala, FL and a nephew, Thurman Golightly of Levittown, PA.

He will be remembered as a patriot who served his country bravely in three wars and continued to serve his government after his military service ended by providing protection to members of the U.S. Congress. Joining the U.S. Army in 1944, he served in the Philippines until the end of World War II. Following his discharge from the Army, he joined the U.S. Air Force and again served in combat zones in the Korean War and two tours of duty in Vietnam during the Vietnam War. He also was stationed at Air Force bases in Europe and Japan, as well as several bases in the United States.

After his retirement from the Air Force, he began a second career as a U.S. Capitol Police Officer in Washington. He rose through the ranks to become the officer responsible for providing security for the Chairman, Senator Sam Ervin, and members of the Senate Select Committee on the Impeachment of President Nixon.

Ronnie Musick will conduct the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 5, 2011 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service in Abingdon, VA. Interment will follow in Knollkreg Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be William Helton, Thomas Naggs, Brian Owens, Keith Owens, Matt Phillips, and Rob Rixmann. Graveside rites by Highlands Veterans Honor Guard and Virginia National Guard Honor Guard

The family will receive friends an hour before the funeral service at the funeral home. The family would like to express appreciation for the care and assistance provided by the staff at the Hughes Home during the time he was a resident there.
