Fred T. Thrasher, 82, husband, father and patriot passed into the life of the Spirit on Tuesday, May 17, 2011.
He was born November 3, 1928 in Roanoke, VA and was the eldest son of the late, James Lacy and Virginia W. Darst Thrasher. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Wallace S. Thrasher.
Fred was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy as a Yeoman aboard the U.S.S. Kaskaskia, a fleet oiler, during World War II in the Pacific. After the war he attended the University of Richmond. He worked for Commercial Credit, Rish Equipment Co., Virginia Maid Hosiery, and retired after starting his own clothing business.
In retirement, he reestablished a moribund, General William Campbell's Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR). He served as president and director until no longer physically able. He was involved in many historical events in the area and was portrayed as the "ghost of George Washington". For four years, he taught a class on the American Revolution at Virginia Highlands Community College for older adults. He was a member of Abingdon United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Janice E. Frazier Thrasher; one brother, John D. Thrasher and wife, Audrey; four children, Allyson G. Perlman and husband, Mark, B. Lynn Keister and husband, Steve, James Bruce Thrasher and special friend, Priscilla Hicks and Anne S. Southwood and husband, Robert; nine grandchildren, Sarah and husband, Mike Williams, Seth, Kelly, Zachary, Keegan, Chelsea, Ian, Ben and Samantha.
The family extends appreciation to Dr. William Baker and Belinda Blevins and to National Health Care in Bristol, VA for their compassion and care.
In celebration of his life, the family will receive friends at Farris Funeral Service, 427 E. Main St. Abingdon, from 2:00 until 4:00 P.M. Saturday, May 21, 2011. The service will be held at Abingdon United Methodist Church on Saturday at 5:00 P.M. Honorary Pallbearers will be from the General William Campbell Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution and the Wesley Class of Abingdon United Methodist Church.
Interment will be private at Dublin Veterans Cemetery in Dublin, VA.
