Garland W. Hess, age 88, of Bristol, Va., went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, October 31, 2017, at the Wellmont Hospice House. He was born September 27, 1929, to the late Herman Hess and Martha Havens Hess in Smyth County, Va. Garland was a veteran of the United States Army having served in Korea where he received the United Nation Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, the Combat Infantry Badge, and a Purple Heart. He was a member of Victory Baptist Church and retired from Valleydale Meats after 37 years.
In addition to his parents, Garland was also preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Nellie Sword Hess; three brothers, James Hess, Carlos Hess, and Eugene Hess; three sisters, Cornelia Akers, Eunice Vipperman, and Edith Jones.
He is survived by his son, Wesley Hess and wife, Sheila, of Bristol, Va.; daughter, Barbara Baines and husband, Larry, of Eugene, Mo.; brother, Marvin Hess of Maryland; sister, Lou Mae Parks of Marion, Va.; granddaughter, Brittany Baines and Jason Pecaut, of Jefferson City, Mo.; and two great grandchildren, Harper Pecaut and Dash Pecaut; three step-grandchildren, Larry C. Baines of Suffolk, Va., Bobby Baines of Jonesborough, Tenn., and April Kent of Johnson City, Tenn.
A cryptside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, November 3, 2017, at the Colonial Chapel Mausoleum of Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Dr. Austin Cook officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Highlands Veterans Honor Guard and the Virginia National Guard. Visitation will be from 12:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m. Friday, November 3, 2017, at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service.
