George Elliott Munsey

George Elliott Munsey, "Sweet Pea," of Lebanon, Virginia, passed on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at Bristol Regional Medical Center with his loving family by his side. He was born on March 19, 1935, in Lebanon, Virginia to the late Thomas Gordon and Reba Honaker Munsey.

Sweet Pea grew up in Lebanon, Virginia, graduating from Lebanon High School where he was the quarterback of the football team, graduating in 1954. Following graduation, he volunteered in the United States Army and completed basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. From there he spent two years in Berlin, Germany as a cryptographer.

After he was honorably discharged from the Army, he attended Emory and Henry College in Emory, Virginia. He spent five years with Norfolk and Western Railroad as a Brakeman. The remainder of his career was spent with American Electric Power Company at the Clinch River Plant starting as a Chemist Assistant, retired as the Utility Supervisor.

Following his marriage to Geneva Parrott in December 1956, they lived in Lebanon, Virginia. There, Sweet Pea served as a charter member of the Lebanon Life Saving Crew. After moving to Cleveland, Virginia, he served on the Board of Directors for the Cleveland Life Saving Crew.

In 2015 they moved to Abingdon, Virginia, where he was a faithful member of Pleasant View Methodist Church serving on the Board of Trustees, a member of the Helping Hands, and the Joy Group. He was also a member of the Highlands Emmaus Community.

Sweet Pea was a 60-year member of the William Burchfield Masonic Lodge #294, serving as the Worshipful Master in 1967, and the Castlewood Masonic Lodge #231.

Sweet Pea took great pleasure in telling everyone about his sons and grandchildren's achievements.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter; brothers, Robert and Thomas; and his sister Mary Kiser.

He is survived by his wife, Dr. Geneva Parrott Munsey; sons, Gordon Munsey and wife Vickie of Canton, Georgia, Colonel Thomas Munsey, U.S. Army Retired, and his wife Lynwood of Columbia, South Carolina; grandchildren, Andrew Munsey, Jacob Munsey, Thomas Munsey, Claire Munsey, Carlyn Duke, Michael Duke and a great-granddaughter. Also surviving are his four nieces, Lisa Messamore, Sherry France, Toni Gail Fugate, and Missy Johnson; Darius Johnson who he truly loved as a son; Joy Munsey and a host of loving friends.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 15, 2025 from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm at Pleasant View Methodist Church. A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, at 6:00 pm at Pleasant View Methodist Church with Rev. Dale Gilbert and Rev. Barbara Farmer officiating.
