George V. Brewster, age 69, passed away on Thursday, May 24, 2012 at Valley Health Care in Chilhowie, Va.
George was born July 14, 1942 in Newhall, WV, to the late Carl and Mary Lee Graham Brewster. He had lived in Abingdon for the past twenty years, coming from Cucumber, WV. George served in the U.S. Army and was a member of Abingdon Masonic Lodge #48. He was a retired coal miner from Consol Energy where he had worked as a coal mine foreman. George was an active member of Lifeline Ministries, where he served as president of the men's fellowship. He also served as the Appalachian Conference District Leader for Southwest Virginia at Lifeline Ministries. He was a member of the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Team and helped during the April 2011 tornado and other disasters on the East Coast.
George was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed watching his grandsons play ball, sitting on his porch drinking coffee, hunting, water skiing, playing guitar and singing in the choir. He also loved his dog, Louie. George enjoyed helping people and was an all-around handy man. He was fondly known as the "Prop Boss" for Xtreme Dance Company.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Norma Lee Logan.
Survivors include his loving wife of fifty-one wonderful years, Mary Caccano Brewster; his children: Sherry Payne and husband Michael; Anthony Brewster and wife Rebecca; Carl Brewster and wife Heather; and Tina Woods, all of Abingdon; nine grandchildren: Jonathan Payne and wife Nichole of Norfolk, VA; Andrew and Casey Payne of Abingdon; Tiffany Brewster of Gray, TN; Anthony Brewster, Jr. of Bristol, VA; Dylan Brewster of Abingdon; Emma Brewster of Abingdon; and Rachel and Marygrace Woods of Abingdon; one great-grandchild, Lynda Marie Forman of Norfolk, VA; and two brothers: Larry Brewster and wife Debbie, and Allen Brewster and wife Debbie, all of Tazewell, VA.
The funeral service for George Brewster will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 28, 2012, at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Pastor Darrell Martin officiating. Burial will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA. Military graveside rites will be offered by Barnes and Beavers VFW, Post #7136. Active pallbearers will be Jonathan Payne, Andrew Payne, Casey Payne, Anthony Brewster, Jr., Larry Thornsberry and Blaine Thompson. Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Carver and Gary Anderson.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. 9:00 p.m. Sunday, May 27, 2012, at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, with a Masonic service at 8:00 p.m. offered by Abingdon Masonic Lodge #48.
