Mrs. Georgia Kathryn Cox, 93, passed away Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was born in Russell County, Virginia but had lived most of her life in Washington County. Mrs. Cox was a hardworking farmer's wife and devoted mother who ran her household with love and great skill. She was a wonderful cook and raised a large garden; she enjoyed canning the harvest from that garden and sharing that food with others. Mrs. Cox loved children, and until she was eighty years old she provided care for grandchildren in her home. She was a God-fearing woman and a member of Mountain View Baptist Church.
Mrs. Cox was preceded in death by her parents, George Lawary Cox and Augusta "Gussie" Jones Cox; her husband, Burlen Cox; her children Tom Cox, Oscar Cox, Marion Lee Cox, and a stillborn daughter, Margie; her brothers Clyde Cox, Jimmy Cox, and still born brother; sisters Clara Vencill, Eva Smith, and Louise Barnette.
She is survived by her daughters, Dorothy Clanahan of Ft. Walton Beach, FL, and Lois Wilson (Larry) of Glade Spring; 19 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; one great-great-great-grandchild; brother George Cox of Cedar Bluff, VA; sisters Pauline Melvin of Bristol, TN; Stella Vencill of Belfast, VA; Mary Vencill of Belfast, VA; Sylvia Fields of Troy, VA; Ruby Slate (Dean) of Cedar Bluff, VA; and Nancy Mounts of Richlands, VA.
The family offers a special loving "thank you" to Jackie and Trish Cox-Gissendanner for opening their home to Granny. They also wish to thank Dr. Emily Debord, Dr. Lacyoni Moraes, Dr. Mia Wessels, and the doctors and staff at Johnston Memorial Hospital (3rd Floor) for all of their loving care.
The funeral service for Mrs. Cox will be held at 8:00 p.m. Thursday, April 4, 2013, in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Joseph Gillespie, Rev. Sherrill Dunn, and Pastor Tommy Wilson officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the funeral service on Thursday, beginning at 6:00 p.m. The burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 5, 2013, at Mt. View Baptist Church Cemetery, and grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Family and friends who would like to travel to the cemetery in a procession should meet at the funeral home by 10:30 a.m. Friday.
