Geraldine Katherine Stone, a beloved teacher who dedicated 39 years of her life to students in Washington County Schools, has passed away. Born on October 22, 1932, in Washington County, VA, to the late Clyde William McCroskey and Lucille Cunningham McCroskey. She peacefully departed from this world on December 9, 2023, in Bristol, VA. She was a kind-hearted woman who played an integral role in the lives of countless young individuals.
Geraldine's journey started at Greendale High School, where she completed her secondary education. Fueled by her passion for teaching, she went on to earn a bachelor's degree in education from Radford College. Armed with knowledge and an unwavering determination to make a positive impact on future generations, Geraldine embarked on her teaching career.
Throughout her four-decade-long tenure as an educator, Geraldine touched the lives of many students and colleagues alike. Her gifted ability to cultivate curiosity and nourish young minds left an indelible mark on the community. Each day inside the classroom was an opportunity for Geraldine to ignite a flame of knowledge and instill a thirst for learning within her students. She found immense joy in witnessing their growth achievements.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Geraldine was known for her warm smile and gentle spirit. Outside of her teaching responsibilities, she relished in various hobbies and interests that brought happiness to her life. Gardening held a special place in her heart; tending to her flowers was not only a source of relaxation but also allowed her to create beautiful natural spaces. Geraldine also found solace between the pages of a book and cherished the moments spent immersed in captivating stories. Additionally, she took great pleasure in working on the family farm, appreciating the connection with nature that it provided.
In addition to her parents, Geraldine was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis Mitchell Stone; two sisters, Peggy Orfield and Barbara JoAnn "Bobbie" Stewart; and brothers-in-law Douglas Orfield and Robert Stewart.
In addition to leaving behind generations of inspired students and grateful colleagues, Geraldine is survived by several cherished family members and friends. Her legacy lives on through her son, Curtis "Mike" Stone II, and daughter-in-law, Marcia Elizabeth "Beth" W. Stone; grandson, Curtis "Curt" Stone; brother, Ronald McCroskey, and sister-in-law, Charlotte McCroskey; several nieces and nephews including Howard Orfield, Jimmy Stewart, Brad McCroskey (Laine), Billy Stone (Barbara), and Howard Stone (Jan).
To honor the life and legacy of Geraldine Katherine Stone, a visitation has been scheduled for December 14, 2023, at Edgemont Presbyterian Church in Bristol, TN. The visitation will begin at 12:00 PM and conclude at 2:00 PM. A funeral service honoring Geraldine's life will follow the visitation at the same location. The service will commence at 2:00 PM with Rev. Aaron Bartmess officiating. Following the funeral service, a burial ceremony will take place at Forest Hills Memory Gardens in Abingdon, VA. The burial is scheduled to begin at 3:30 PM. Pallbearers will be family and friends.
