Gilmer J. Murray, Jr., age 84, of Abingdon, Va., passed away on Friday, July 15, 2016, at the Mountain Home VA Medical Center in Johnson City, Tenn. He was born to the late Gilmer J. Murray, Sr. and Oda Stewart Murray on December 31, 1931. Gilmer was a veteran of the United States Army having served in the Korean War. He was the recipient of three Bronze Stars and the Medal of Valor. Gilmer retired from Comfort Systems, the former Fred Hayes Mechanical Contractors, after 60 years with the company.
He was preceded in death by his wife of over 50 years, Betty Ruth Tolliver Murray; three brothers, Lester, Don, and Clyde Murray; sister, Edith Hearl; great granddaughter, Regina Eustler; and a daughter-in-law, Sabrina Murray.
He is survived by three sons, Gilmer J. Murray, III of Abingdon; Richard V. Murray and wife Barbara of Charlottesville, Va.; and Robert William Murray and wife Crystal of Abingdon; daughter, Cynthia J. Murray of Abingdon; two brothers, Ernest Murray and Walter Murray and wife Shirley all of Abingdon; sister, Nellie Scyphers of Abingdon; eight grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 19, 2016, at Mountain View United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. John E. Massey, Jr. officiating. Military Honors will be provided by the Highlands Veterans Honor Guard and the Virginia National Guard. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to convene at the funeral home by 10:30 a.m. Tuesday to travel in procession. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. Monday, July 18th at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service.
