Abingdon, VA – Gilmer Mann, Sr., age 87, passed on Saturday, September 30, 2017, at his home. Gilmer was a lifelong resident of Washington County and worked many years for Meyer’s Construction. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War where he received the Purple Heart for wounds received in combat. He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Bessie Lowe Mann; wife, Gladys Mabe Mann; sons, Jeffery K. Mann and Kenneth Allen Mann; daughter, Kathy L. Mann Kelly; brother, Richard Mann; and sisters, Gracie Mahala, Hazel Otey, and Mammie Mann.
He is survived by three sons, Buddy Mann and wife Connie of Abingdon, VA, Bobby Mann and wife Jane of Meadowview, VA, and Russell Mann and wife Debbie of Abingdon, VA; sister, Eva; grandchildren, Becky Moore, Justin Mann, Brandon Mann, Chris Mann, and Mike McAlpin; several great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation with the family will be held 6-8 p.m. Sunday, October 1, 2017, at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday in Mt. View United Methodist Church Cemetery with Pastor Dale Myers officiating. Military Rites will be conducted by Highlands Veterans Honor Guard and the Virginia National Guard. Pallbearers will be Brandon Mann, Justin Mann, Chris Mann, Daryl Mabe, Wesley Moore, and Mark Miller. Honorary pallbearers will be Pete Henry, Darryl Farmer, Gus Mahala, Dustin McCracken, Bret Mann, Shawn Mann, Jacob Lane, Tyler Lane, and Mike McAlpin. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to convene at the cemetery.
