Blountville, TN – Gladys Berniece McNew, age 72, passed away at her home on Friday, December 12, 2014. Mrs. McNew, formerly of Abingdon, had lived in Blountville for the past 35 years. Gladys was known to be a strong woman of the Lord who deeply loved her family. She would rather be out of doors gardening or caring for the animals that she took in than being inside. Her life is best summed by saying that she was widowed at age 26,had seven children, and cared for and raised them all. Gladys was predeceased by her parents, Joe and Rosie Thomas, and her husband, Dorse Mahoney “Mac” McNew. She is survived by two sons, Johnny and Danny McNew, both of Blountville, TN; five daughters, Sherry (Tony) Shortridge of Richmond, VA; Patty (Clifford) Canter, Debbie Millsap, Donna (David) Morrison and Terry McNew, all of Blountville, TN; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm on Monday, December 15, 2014 at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday December 16, 2014 at the Farris Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Glade Spring, VA. Pallbearers will be Jody Thomas, Mickey Canter, B.J. Canter, Josh Morrison, Daniel McNew and Tom McNew. Grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers. The family would like to offer special thanks to caregivers John, Jan, Heather, Hailey and Sierra for the love and kindness shown to Gladys during her illness.
