H. Alan Pickrell

He was a professor at Emory-Henry College for 37 years, there he was head of the Theater and Speech Departments. He had a deep love of The Wizard of Oz and was an avid collector of juvenile series books, but above all, he loved spending time with family, especially his grandchildren. He was a great husband, father and grandfather.

In addition to his parents, Alan is preceded in death by his daughter, Laura Pickrell Miller and his brother, John Walter Pickrell.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Ellie McDowell Pickrell; daughter, Allison Statzer and husband David; son-in-law, Dean Miller; five grandchildren, Jacob Statzer, Deanna Pope, Joshua Pope, Brittney Doane and Morgan Pope and eleven great grandchildren.

The family requests a memorial gathering of family and friends on Friday, September 15, 2023, from 2:00 PM until 3:00 PM at the Chilhowie United Methodist Church, 501 Old Stage Road, Chilhowie, VA with a memorial service to follow. Pastor Jacob Countiss and Rev. David St. Clair will be officiating.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donation be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, stjude.org.
