Harry Washington Orfield, 91, passed away on Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at his home.
He was a lifelong resident of Washington County, Virginia and was the son of the late, Isaac Washington and Minnie White Orfield. Mr. Orfield was a member of Lebanon United Methodist Church in Meadowview, a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II, and worked as a farmer most of his life and enjoyed raising tobacco and milking cows. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Hazel Thayer Orfield; seven brothers, Milton Orfield, Henry Orfield, Chris Orfield, Robert Orfield, Clarence Orfield, Rodney Orfield, and William Orfield; and four sisters, Lilly Edwards, Margaret Peters, Martha Lee Holman, and Mary Snodgrass. He was also recently preceded in death by his son Dwane's wife, Elizabeth Orfield.
Survivors include his children; Dwane Orfield of Bristol, Virginia, Glenn Orfield and wife, Barbara of Sunset Beach, North Carolina, Conley Orfield of Meadowview, Linda Crane and husband, Phil of Glade Spring, Virginia, Gail Orfield and wife, Gayle Ann of Vancleve, Mississippi, and Mark Orfield and wife, Suzanne of Meadowview; one brother, James Orfield and wife, Evelyn of Bristol, VA; three sisters, Mildred Blaylock of Blountville, TN, Frances Dougherty of Bristol, TN, and Katherine Broce, Bristol, TN; twenty-six grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mr. Orfield will be conducted at 3:00 pm Saturday, March 19, 2011 at Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Paul Griffith and Rev. Marvin Howard officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain View United Methodist Church Cemetery in Abingdon. Pallbearers will be grandsons and honorary pallbearers will be Harry Paris and Bill Neese.
The family will receive friends Friday, March 18, 2011 from 7:00 9:00 pm and Saturday, March 19 from 2:00 pm until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Mountain View United Methodist Church, 23072 Watauga Road, Abingdon, VA 24211 or the Lebanon United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 667, Glade Spring, VA 24340.
