Hazel Holmes, age 81, of Meadowview, Va., passed away on Sunday, May 27, 2018, at Abingdon Health and Rehab Center. She was born December 4, 1936, to the late Elliott Widener and Myrtle Thomas Widener. Hazel was a member of Abingdon Church of Christ and worked in the cafeteria at Patrick Henry for 38 years.
In addition to her parents, Hazel was also preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Henry Stuart Holmes; three brothers; and nine sisters. She is survived by five children: Wayne Holmes and wife, Shelia, of Meadowview, Va.; Carol Henry and husband, Pete, of Abingdon, Va.; Janie Mann and husband, Bob, of Meadowview, Va.; Jerry Holmes of the home; and Larry Holmes of Meadowview, Va.; two sisters, Lenise Stout of Bristol, Va. and Edna Owens of Kingsport, Tenn.; 13 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; one great grandchild on the way; two great-great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren on the way.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, 2018, at Rush Creek Cemetery with Minister Bill Haywood officiating. Pallbearers will be Michael Hicks, Derek Holmes, Dustin McCracken, Randall McCracken, Cody Widener, and Adam Wilson. Honorary pallbearers will be Vernon Corum, Pete Henry, Dillon Holmes, and Bob Mann.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Pl., Memphis, TN 38105.
