Helen J. Holliday, age 94, passed away at Wellmont Hospice House, Bristol TN, on Tuesday, September 4, 2012.
She was a native of Abingdon but after suffering a stroke in 2010 had resided at NHC Healthcare, Bristol, VA. She was the daughter of the late Lee Roy and Susie Hockett Johnson.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years Robert L. Holliday, three brothers, Thurman, F.A., and Robert Lee Johnson and one sister, Lucille J. Musick Scott.
Helen graduated from William King High School and during World War II worked at the National Fireworks Shell Loading Plant in Bristol, VA. She was also employed at Rex Shopping Center for several years.
She was a long-time member of Abingdon Baptist Church where she worked with the younger children, teaching Sunday School and assisting with other youth programs.
Surviving are two brothers, Luther P. Johnson and Herbert L. Johnson, both of Abingdon. Having no children of her own, she was particularly caring of nieces, Irene J. Meade, Peggy J. Johnson, Sue J. Goodman, Judy J. Warren, all of Abingdon, and Karen L. Johnson, Alexandria, VA, and nephews, Robert L. Johnson, Jr., Charlotte, NC; Randall P. Johnson, Bristol, VA, and Christopher L. Johnson, Bristow, VA, all of whom survive her. Great-nieces, great-nephews, and numerous cousins also survive her.
A memorial service, celebrating the life of Helen J. Holliday, will be held Friday, September 7, 2012, at 2:00 pm, at Abingdon Baptist Church. The family will receive friends one hour before the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Children's Ministry, Abingdon Baptist Church, 361 W. Main Street, Abingdon, VA 24210.
