Henry Gundry (Harry)(Gus) Crowgey, 96, passed away at his home on Sunday, November 4, 2012.

Interment will be at 1:15 p.m., Sunday, November 11th at Holston Conference Cemetery, Emory. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday at Emory United Methodist Church. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall.

Dr. Crowgey was born in Emory, VA. He received an A.B. Degree in history from Emory & Henry College, an M.A. Degree in history from Appalachian State Teachers College, and a Ph.D. in history from the University of Kentucky.

Dr. Crowgey was honorably discharged from the United States Navy with the rank of Lieutenant Commander after serving as a naval pilot from 1937 to 1946. During World War II he served in the Pacific Theater.

From 1947-1967 Dr. Crowgey was an apple grower in Alexander and Wilkes Counties in North Carolina. Following this, he was a professor of history at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. In 1971 his book "Kentucky Bourbon: the Early Years of Whiskeymaking" was published by the University Press of Kentucky and was reprinted in 2008.

He was preceded in death by his wife Margaret Proffitt (Margie) Crowgey, his parents Mary Elizabeth Akers Crowgey and Henry Lawrence Crowgey, his brothers Charles Crowgey and John Crowgey, his son-in-law Joe S. Rowe, and his daughter-in-law Carol Bebber Crowgey.

Survivors include his son Danny Crowgey, daughters Margaret Rowe and Jeanne Crowgey, grandson Caleb Rowe, granddaughter Gundry Rowe and grandson-in-law John Costello, and sisters Elizabeth Young and Rosalind Campbell.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Crowgey Family Scholarship, P.O.
