Henry Steward Lester, 87, of Abingdon passed away on Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at Johnston memorial Hospital after an extended illness.
Henry was born August 8, 1923 in Buchanan County, VA to the late Basil and Crissie Helton Lester. He was a past member of Clark Memorial Presbyterian Church in Roseann, VA. Henry retired as a coal miner after 40 years in part with Jeffrey Mining and Machine, Columbus, OH. After retiring from the coal mine Henry worked for Washington County. Henry was a 32 degree Mason and Shriner from Roanoke, VA, and a honorable discharged veteran of the U.S. Air Force serving during WWII as a CPL from 1942 to 1946.
Henry is preceded in death by three brothers, Ira, Edgar and Earl Lester; and six sisters, Helen Lester Matney, Louise Blair, Lillian Christian, Stella Estep, Ella Hensley, and Laura Marcum.
Surviving him are his wife of 65 years, Irma Chaney Lester; two sons, Douglas Henry Lester of Sumter, SC, and Donald Richard Lester and his wife Linda of Hurley, VA; also surviving are five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday, April 17, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Green Hills Memory Gardens, at Claypool Hill with Minister Curtis A. Stacy officiating. The family will receive friends on Saturday, April 16, 2011 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Farris Funeral Service, 427 East Main Street, Abingdon, Virginia 24210.
Military Honors will be provided by Highlands Veterans Honor Gaurd and Virginia National Gaurd Honor Gaurd at the Graveside.
