Hilda Gertrud Barbara Tomaschautzki Warren, 99 years young, went to meet her Lord and Savior on the morning of September 27, 2024. Mrs. Warren was born in Skrodein, Lithuania and grew up on a very large working family farm with 5 brothers and sisters in Eistrawischken, Lithuania. She went to college at the University of Korneuburg and was separated from her family when the college abruptly closed due to World War II. This left her stranded with no way to get home to her family. Her older brother, Bruno, led their escape by walking 100’s of miles from East to West Germany, sleeping in barns or woods along the way and relying on the kindness of strangers for food and shelter. She survived World War II and the invasion by the Russians who occupied their farm where they were never able to return.
She married Harold E. Warren in 1951. They met in Germany where she worked as a switchboard operator on a U.S. Army base where he was stationed. Mr. Warren passed away in 2017. She greeted him, via his portrait on the wall, every morning and evening after his death. Mr. and Mrs. Warren raised two children, Dianna Warren Wilson, of Bristol, TN and H. Marion Warren of Bristol, VA. Ms. Warren was the last surviving sibling of the Tomaschautzki family.
Ms. Warren, our matriarch, is survived by her family who loved her very much; Dianna Warren Wilson, daughter; H. Marion Warren, son and wife, Lois. She is also survived by granddaughter, Gabriele Cooper and husband Brian; grandson, Johnathan Sparger and wife Marie; granddaughter, Adriana Warren Cornett and husband Drew; grandsons, Joshua Warren and Caleb Warren; great grandsons Dakota Colvin, Samuel Cornett, Phillip Cornett, Benjamin Cornett and James Cornett; great granddaughters, Jessica Whitaker and D.J, Sophia Cooper, Emilia Sparger, and Selma Sparger; great-great grandchildren, Bryson, Maddie and Landon Woodard; niece, Debbie Simpson and husband Tim; great nieces, Gwen Harville, and husband Brian, and Naomi Simpson.
Hilda is also survived by relatives who still live in Germany: nephews, Reinhold Hanusch and wife Ingrid, Jurgen Tomaschautzki, Michael Tomaschautzki and wife Diana; niece, Gabriele Waltz; great niece and nephews, Steffi, Bernd, Alexander, Florian, and Samuel.
She also had many friends at Brookdale Assisted Living Facility in Bristol, Virginia where she lived after Mr. Warren’s passing. She loved the staff and residents there.
The family would like to thank the caregivers who provided wonderful care, Lisa McNeely and Joella Wilson, special nurses from Caris Hospice, Courtney Wright and Sarah Elliot. Special thanks to Jessica Whitaker, her great grandaughter who provided excellent and loving care for her “Grandmom” nearly every day for several years.
