Howard Dean McCormick, 78, died at home from an extended illness on January 25, 2012. He was born February 11, 1933, in Abingdon , Va. He served his country in the U.S. Army with two years active duty in Korea and thirty-five years in the Army Reserve, 80th Division, retiring as C SM-E9 in 1987. Howard worked for VDOT in the Bristol , Va. Bridge Division for thirty-seven years. He was a graduate of William King High School and held several engineering certificates through ICS.
Howard was a member of Pleasant View United Methodist Church , a Master Mason with Abingdon Lodge No. 48, and a member of the Western Square Dance Club. His enjoyment was family, church, golf, hunting, and working on his lawn.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents, Herman Montgomery McCormick and Flossie Lee Ball McCormick; brother Herman McCormick, Jr.; sister Billy Jo Seymore; brothers-in-law Fred Seymore, Ernest Crenshaw, James Crabtree, Danny Counts, Dorlan Counts and C.W. Kirk; and a special niece, Tracy Crabtree.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Counts McCormick; one daughter, Den�© Jane McCormick of Radford , Va. ; sister Shirley Widner and husband William; sisters-in-law Dora Mae McCormick, June Crenshaw, Joyce Crabtree and Treva Kirk; and several nieces and nephews.
The family of Howard McCormick will receive friends on Friday, January 27, 2012, from 6 8 p.m. at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway , Abingdon. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 28, 2012, at Pleasant View United Methodist Church with the Rev. Barbara Farmer officiating. Burial will follow at Knollkreg Memorial Park . Pallbearers will be Greg Crenshaw, Sherrill Crenshaw, Travis Crabtree, Fred Adkins, Dwayne Orfield, and Larry Thomas. Honorary pallbearers will be Pleasant View Fellowship Sunday School Class, Army Reserve Unit 80th Division, and neighbors. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wellmont Hospice, Home Health Division, 280 Steeles Road, Bristol, TN 37620; Pleasant View United Methodist Church, 18416 Lee Highway, Abingdon, VA 24210; or one's charity of choice.
