Hugh S. "Doc" Arnold, 80, was called home to Heaven on Monday, July 13, 2009 at his home.
He was born October 12, 1928 in Washington County, Virginia and was a son of the late Sterling Jackson and Ethel Gertude Warren Arnold. He was a lifelong resident and farmer in Washington County and attended Outreach for Christ Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, J.C., John, Scott, and Milt Arnold. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Survivors are his wife, Ethel Widener Arnold; his daughter, Francis "Sissy" Thomas of Abingdon; sons, Bobby Arnold and wife, Kay of Damascus, Dennis Arnold and wife, Carol of Abingdon, Jerry "Mickey" Arnold and wife, Sharon of Saltville, and Otis Arnold of Abingdon; nine grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and many friends also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8:00 P.M. Thursday, July 16, 2009 at Farris Funeral Chapel with Pastor Billy Vandyke, Lonnie Keen, and Don Snowden officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:45 P.M. Thursday. The committal service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, July 17 at Forest Hills Memory Gardens Serenity Mausoleum. Pallbearers will be Harold Crosswhite, Jr., Bill Mink, Carl Street, Dale Breeding, Ronnie Doss, Marion "Bones" Spiva, Greg South and Kenneth Wolf. Honorary Pallbearers will be Brian Arnold, Brad Arnold, Allen Arnold, Mathew Arnold, Gerry Collins, Mark Arnold, Kenny Ray, Jason Arnold, Bill Widener, Dewayne South, and Friends of the Washington County Sheriff's Department. Those wishing to go in procession to the cemetery may assemble at the funeral home by 1:30 P.M. Friday. The family will be receiving friends at the home of Dennis Arnold, 22049 Azure Lane, Abingdon, VA anytime prior to the service and immediately following the service on Friday.
In lieu of flowers, the family wishes for contributions to be made to Mrs. Arnold.
