Irene Dixon Cowan, age 94, passed away on Monday, December 3, 2012 at Bristol Regional Medical Center.
She was born in Holston on January 14, 1918 to the late Floyd and Nora Counts Dixon. Mrs. Cowan taught in the Washington County school system for 25 years. She and her late husband, Robert Sutton Cowan, farmed in the Mendota Community for many years.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Frances Farris, Charlie Dixon, Emma Ratliff, Bill Dixon, Pearl Grubb, and James Dixon.
Survivors include her daughter, Mary Thacker and her husband, Jack of Bristol, TN; two brothers, Roger Dixon and his wife, Elsie, Darius Dixon and his wife, Barbara; two sisters, Genevieve McCall and Inez Carico; one grandson J.R. "Rob" Thacker and his wife, Joy; great grandchildren, Evan and Morgan Thacker; several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 8, 2012 at Greendale Chapel Cemetery with Pastor Scott Price officiating. Those wishing to attend the service at the cemetery are asked to gather at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service by 10:30 a.m., Saturday to join the procession to the cemetery. Staff from Broadmore Senior Living will serve as honorary pallbearers.
