Jack Silvin Smith, born in Saltville, VA and formerly of Glade Spring, VA, passed away in his Cherokee Lake home in Bean Station, TN on Thursday, March 20th. Jack was 80. Jack served in the U.S. Army in the Korean War. He later worked at Celanese Corporation, Turner Construction and Purolator Express.
Jack is the builder and former owner of the Jiff-E-Jack Market in Glade Spring, VA. The Jiff-E-Jack was known for decades by Emory & Henry College students as a place for late night snacks and pizza. He later enjoyed his retirement years fishing at Cherokee Lake, hiking, watching NASCAR, and caring for homeless animals.
He is survived by three sons: Russ of Tysons Corner, VA; Tim of Amelia Courthouse, VA; and Kevin of Oklahoma City, OK; grandson, Derrick; great-grandson, Levi; five siblings, Fern, Peggy, Georgia, and C.T. all of Ridgeway, VA and Carolyn of Statesville, NC. He is preceded in his death by his father, Kefton; mother, Mamie; and brother, Buddy.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 28, 2014, at Mt. Rose Cemetery with the Rev. Timothy Bird, Sr. officiating. Military Rites will be conducted by Highlands Veterans Honor Guard and the Virginia National Guard. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to convene at the cemetery by 11:00 a.m. Friday.
Visitation with the family will be held 6:00-7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 27th at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service.
