James Carter Lambert

April 20, 1925 — November 26, 2015

Abingdon, Va. Carter Lambert went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, November 26, 2015. He was born on April 20, 1925 to Rassie Lambert in Dickenson County, Va. Carter enlisted in the Navy in 1943 and fought in World War II in the South Pacific where he participated in the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the largest Navy battle in history. He was also in Okinawa on V-J Day. After the war he returned home to Dickenson County and married the love of his life, Beulah Stanley (Boots), in 1946. Together they reared three children. Carter founded McClure River Coal Company and operated it until retiring to his cattle farm on the North Fork Holston River in Washington County. Carter was a member of the Board of Directors of Highlands Union Bank, a thirty second degree Mason, and a member of Masonic Lodge #48 in Abingdon. Carter was preceded in death by his mother Rassie and granddaughter Bronwyn Dean. He is survived by his wife Beulah (Boots) Lambert; children, daughter Sharon Rollins and her husband Raymond of Kodak, Tenn., son Nick Lambert and his wife Phyllis of Bristol, Va., and daughter Deborah Dean and her husband Michael of Burke, Va.; and six grandchildren, Douglas Rollins, Michael Rollins, Jill Lambert, Nathan Lambert, Carlin Dean and Rowanne Dean. The funeral service for Carter Lambert will be held at 7:00 p.m. Sunday, November 29, 2015, at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, with Dr. Austin Cook officiating. The family will receive friends at the Forest Hills Chapel prior to the service Sunday from 5:00 p.m. 7:00 p.m. The committal service and burial will be Monday at 10:00 a.m. at Forest Hills Memory Gardens, where pallbearers will be Douglas Rollins, Nathan Lambert, Sam Neese, Gray Taylor, Larry Lambert and Raymond Stanley. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Ralph Stanley, David Looney, and the Board of Directors of Highlands Union Bank.
