Glade Spring, VA James A. “Jay” Henderson, Jr., age 66, passed on Thursday, July 30, 2015, at Bristol Regional Medical Center surrounded by his immediate family. He died due to complications from cancer. Jay was born in Knoxville, TN and graduated from Knoxville Central High School. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Geology at East Tennessee State University and later earned a Master’s Degree in Geo Science from Purdue University. Jay moved to Virginia after accepting a position with the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals, and Energy in Charlottesville, VA where he worked for nine years. In 1984, he moved to Washington County where he worked for the Virginia Division of Gas and Oil until his retirement in 2011. Jay was a member of Old Glade Spring Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder, a Trustee, and was a member of the choir. Jay spent his free time playing golf at Greenway Creek Golf Course where he was a member and volunteered as an usher at the Barter Theatre. He is preceded in death by his parents, James A. Henderson, Sr. and Marie Rose Vokal Henderson. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Susan Dodd Henderson; son, A.J. Henderson of Statesboro, GA; brother, Ben Henderson and wife Mary Underwood of Boone, NC; sister-in-law, Nancy Hyde of St. Petersburg, FL; uncle, Jerry Kuctha of Western Springs, IL; and several close cousins. Visitation with the family will be held 5:30-7:00 p.m., Monday, August 3, 2015, at Old Glade Spring Presbyterian Church. Funeral Services will follow at 7:00 p.m. with Rev. Tim Bird and Rev. Suzanne Martin officiating. A graveside committal service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, in Old Glade Spring Presbyterian Cemetery where men of the church will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Old Glade Spring Presbyterian Church Men’s Sunday School Class and members of Greenway Creek Golf Course.
