James “Jim” Murrell Woodrum, 90, passed on Tuesday, April 2, 2019, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. Jim was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley, W.Va.and earned his Bachelor’s Degree of Music Education from Concord University. He began his career as the first band director of Patrick Henry High School where he also served as the chorus director. Jim later served as the assistant band director at John Battle High School and its elementary feeder program. In total, Jim was a music educator for 34 years and an honorary member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity. He was also U.S. Air Force Veteran of the Korean War.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Richard Martin Woodrum and Vada Bailey Woodrum; brother, Fredrick Woodrum; and sisters, Wilma Boyd and Dorothy Sharett. He is survived by his son, Brother Jim Woodrum, S.S.J.E. of Cambridge, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation with the family will be held 2-3 p.m. Sunday, April 7, 2019, in Abingdon Baptist Church. Funeral services will follow at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Bill Bryan officiating. Entombment will follow in the Colonial Chapel Mausoleum of Forest Hills Memory Gardens with military rites conducted by Highlands Veterans Honor Guard.
