Abingdon, VA James Raymond Barrett, age 91, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 7, 2016, at James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Mr. Barrett was a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army During WWII and served in the European Theatre during which time he received the Purple Heart for wounds sustained during combat. He was an employee of Crabtree Buick-Pontiac for over 30 years and was a member of Victory Baptist Church.
Mr. Barrett is preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Pearl Sauls Barrett; brothers, Ben F. Barrett, Jr., Kenneth Barrett, Bobby Barrett, and Newland Barrett; and sisters, Stella Beavers, Mildred Duff, and Mary Lou Bouchet.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mamie Keen Barrett; daughter, Debbie Barker and husband Phil of Bristol, VA; son, Jimmy Barrett and wife Susan of Winston-Salem, NC; brother, Don Barrett of Honaker, VA; sister, Frances Justice and husband Bobby of Honaker, VA; five grandchildren, Amy Craver and husband Shane, Tiffany Lyon and husband Jeremy, Nicholas Barrett and wife Suzanne, Emily Dickenson and husband Darrell, and Katie Barker; nine great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Vistation with the family will be held 5-7 p.m. Saturday, January 9, 2016, at Victory Baptist Church in Bristol, VA. Funeral services will follow at 7:00 p.m. at the church with Dr. Austin Cook officiating and Sanford Stallcup delivering the eulogy. A committal service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Sunday in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Military Rites will be conducted by Highlands Veterans Honor Guard and the Virginia National Guard. Those wishing to attend the committal are asked to convene at the cemetery by 3:00 p.m.
