James Ronald Looney, Ph.D., age 78, passed away Sunday, March 24, 2013, at his home. He was born in Grundy, VA, son of the late Jennings and Callie Looney. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force and had been stationed in Japan, working in communications. Following his military service, Jim earned his Ph.D. from Ohio University and was Professor of Mass Communications at Virginia Commonwealth University.
Jim was a fiercely independent person, yet was also kind-spirited and loved by children and animals alike. He enjoyed sailing and was a talented artist, primarily focusing on oil paintings.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara; son Timothy Jason Looney; brother Bob Looney; and sister Lois Asbury.
He is survived by his son, Sean Looney of Seattle, WA, and his sister, Ann Schrader of Nags Head, NC.
The funeral service for Jim Looney will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 28, 2013, at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Mr. Tom Crise officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home before the service, beginning at 10:00 a.m. The committal service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Valley Memorial Park in Big Rock, VA.
