James Franklin Stroup, affectionately known as Jim, passed away on June 25, 2024 in Abingdon, VA, at the age of 85. He was born on June 15, 1939, in Damascus, VA, to the late Robert Stroup and Virginia Vannoy Stroup. Jim led a remarkable life filled with dedication and passion in various aspects.
Jim served his country proudly in the United States Air Force from 1958 to 1963 before embarking on a successful career path. In 1975, he took a significant step and opened his own business, Abingdon Steel. Throughout his professional journey spanning from 1975 to 2021, Jim's hard work and commitment left a lasting impact on those around him.
Aside from his professional endeavors, Jim found joy in flying and traveling. His adventurous spirit led him to explore new horizons and create cherished memories along the way.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his brothers Roger Stroup and Jerry Stroup.
A loving patriarch, Jim is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, Gloria Snead Stroup. He will be deeply missed by his son Jeff Stroup and daughter Melissa Mann (David Shelby). James also leaves behind a legacy through his grandchildren: Brian Stroup, Daniel Stroup, Heather Smith (Zach), Rachel Campbell, and Brandon Campbell; great-grandchildren: Emma, Lacey, and Owen; siblings: Kathy Herman, Linda Bryan (Leon), Penny Lyall, Joyce Manuel (Bobby); sister-in-law Margaret Stroup; as well as several nieces and nephews.
A Graveside Service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at Forest Hills Memory Gardens in Abingdon, VA. Military Honor provided by the United States Air Force and Highlands Veterans Honor Guard.
Jim will be remembered for his kindness, work ethic, and zest for life. His legacy will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him. May he rest in peace knowing he touched the hearts of many.
