Mr. James Stuart Mink, Sr., 68, passed away on Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at Johnston Memorial Hospital. He was a lifelong resident of Abingdon, son of the late William “Bill” Mink and Ethel Mink. Jimmy graduated from Abingdon High School in 1967 and from Milligan College in 1971. He retired after more than thirty years as a basketball and golf coach at John S. Battle High School. Jimmy also worked many summers with special-needs children at Camp Waldo Miles. His favorite pastimes were playing golf and fishing. He was a loving, kind man and will be missed by many.
Jimmy is survived by his wife of 48 years, Nancy Carmack Mink; son James Stuart Mink, Jr., wife Jaime, and their children Parker and Kaitlyn, all of Richmond, Va.; daughter Susan Mink Woods, husband Jimmy, and their children Jennings, Ella and Aidan, all of Abingdon; brother Bill Mink and wife Rita; sisters Sally Brown and husband Irvin, and Annis Wagner and husband Chick; mother-in-law Joyce Carmack; and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to offer special thanks to the nursing staff of Memory Lane at Abingdon Health and Rehab Center.
A memorial service for Jimmy “Coach” Mink will be held at 5:00 p.m. Friday, June 9, 2017, at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. Honorary pallbearers will be Robin Smeltzer, Rick Ornduff, Floyd “Dickie” Greer, Ron Mink, and all of Coach’s former athletes and stat girls.
The family will visit with friends following the service. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Virginia-West Virginia Chapter, 4200 Innslake Drive, Suite 301, Glen Allen, VA 23060.
