Janet Cord Lambert

October 14, 1925 — September 5, 2022

Janet Cord Lambert, age 96, of Abingdon, Virginia, passed away on Monday, September 5, 2022, at Commonwealth Senior Living in Abingdon, Virginia. She was born on October 14, 1925, in Radford, Virginia, to the late Mary Farrier Spiggle and the late James Arthur Cord. At an early age, she and her mother moved to her grandparents’ home in the Sinking Creek community in Craig County, Virginia, where she attended Maywood School. Later, she moved to Salem, Virginia, and graduated from Andrew Lewis High School before attending Lewis Gale Nursing School.

While in nursing school, she joined the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps and met her future husband, James (J.C. or Jim) Cameron Lambert, Jr., who was serving in the U.S. Navy during WWII. They married on June 30, 1946, first living in Pocahontas, West Virginia, before moving to Abingdon where she started her career as a nurse at Johnston Memorial Hospital. After spending some time focusing on her family, she went on to work as a school nurse for Washington County Public Schools until she retired in 1987.

Janet was a member of Abingdon Baptist Church and the Mary Maiden Sunday School class there. During her lifetime, she was active in several church programs, including Vacation Bible School, Shalom Singers and her circle. She loved her dear friends in the community and church. Participating in the Random Arts Club and her bridge club were some of her favorite activities. Among her many hobbies were antiquing, cultivating roses and violets, cooking and baking. She was especially known for her sour cream chocolate pound cake.

Janet is survived by her daughter Mary Lambert Cutler (Chris). In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Jim Lambert, her special brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Douglas and Theresa Lambert and her stepfather, Frank Alexander Spiggle.
