Jesse A. Jones

Jesse A. Jones, 83, of Abingdon, VA passed away on January 31, 2025, at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, VA after a short illness. He was born March 3, 1941 to the late Thomas Furman Jones and Sibyl Johnson Jones in Appalachia, VA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas F. Jones, Jr., and his sister, Doris Cowan Barker.

A 1965 graduate of Eastern Kentucky University, Jesse served in the Virginia Army National Guard from 1966-1972. He had a long and distinguished career as a certified public accountant, passing the CPA exam on his first attempt. He began his career in 1966 at Dent K. Burk Associates in Bristol, VA, where he rose to become a senior partner and retired in 2015 after almost 50 years of service.

Jesse was a lifelong fan of the University of Kentucky and followed the UK basketball and football teams closely. He always enjoyed walking his dog and would take long daily walks with his dog well into his 80’s. Jesse had an incredible sense of humor. He loved puns and palindromes. He was always ready with a story and made everyone laugh. He was an optimistic, kind and gentle soul, and he will be sorely missed by all that knew him.

Jesse is survived by his wife of 30 years, Lara Lyman Jones of Abingdon, VA; brother, Winston Jones of Carrollton, GA; sister-in-law, Joyce Jones of Appalachia, VA; son, Bill (Jill) Hudson of Atlanta, GA; son, David (Michelle) Hudson of Alpharetta, GA; stepdaughter, Alison (Bill) Kirksey Chimley of Signal Mountain, TN; stepdaughter, Carolyn Kirksey Connor of Canton, GA; nephew, Tim (Martha) Jones of Big Stone Gap, VA; niece, Pam (Mark) Jones Hutchinson of Appalachia, VA; nephew, Aaron (Lynn) Jones of Carrollton, GA; eight grandchildren and his beloved dog, Rocky.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm on February 7, 2025, at Farris Funeral Service in Abingdon, VA. A private committal service will be held at Knollkreg Memorial Park.
