Jimmy Wampler, age 74, passed on December 21, 2023, at the Johnson City Medical Center in Johnson City, TN. He was born on December 19, 1949, in Haysi, VA to the late Frank Wampler and Myrtle Honaker Wampler. Jimmy was a devoted family man and a hardworking individual who spent most of his career as a heavy equipment operator at Pittston Coal.
Throughout his life, Jimmy had several passions that brought him joy. He found immense satisfaction in working on old cars and attending car shows. His love for automobiles extended beyond the mechanical aspects; he admired the artistry and craftsmanship that went into each vehicle. Additionally, Jimmy enjoyed spending time by the water with the boys and a fishing rod in hand. It provided him with a sense of tranquility and allowed him to reconnect with nature.
Jimmy's dedication to his family was unmatched. For an incredible 52 years, he shared his life with his beloved wife Debra Owens Wampler. Theirs was a true partnership built on love and mutual support. Together they raised a beautiful daughter Meranda Hayden and two wonderful sons named James and Dylan Hayden. Jimmy took great pride in being their father and played an active role in shaping their lives.
Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Meranda Hayden; brothers Cecil and Kurt Wampler; sisters Shelvie, Linda, and Brenda; and half-brother Buster Hess.
In addition to his immediate family members, Jimmy is survived by his brother Billy Wampler and sister-in-law Jean Wampler. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews who held a special place in his heart. Likewise, numerous great nieces and nephews brought joy into Jimmy's life through their youthful energy and contagious laughter.
Friends would describe Jimmy as reliable, dependable, and kind-hearted—a person who would lend a helping hand without hesitation. He possessed an unwavering work ethic that earned the admiration of his colleagues at Pittston Coal as well as those who knew him outside of work.
The visitation will take place on Tuesday, December 26, 2023, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Farris Funeral Service – Main Street Chapel located at 427 E Main St, Abingdon, VA, 24210. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, at 11:00 AM, Farris Funeral Service – Main Street Chapel with Mickey Tiller officiating. The burial will take place at Knollkreg Memorial Park, 556 Walden Rd, Abingdon, VA. Pallbearers will be Nathan Bostic, Blaine McClellan, Jack Stallard, Jerry Buckner, Matthew Mullins, and Dustin Davis. Kermit Thomas will serve as honorary pallbearer.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of Johnson City Medical Center for the care they provided to Jimmy, and a special thank you to Hannah and Hera.
Jimmy Wampler's memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. He leaves behind a lasting legacy not only as a devoted family man but also as a dedicated professional and loyal friend. May he rest in eternal peace.
