Joan Shutters Futrell

Joan Shutters Futrell passed on from this life on Monday, September 11, 2023 at the age of 83. She was born on May 6, 1940 in Abingdon, Virginia to Howard and Katherine Shutters and grew up on Shutters Cove in Holston Valley, Virginia. Ms. Futrell was a graduate of Mendota High School and went on to become the office manager of Builders Supermarket in Abingdon, Virginia.

Ms. Futrell spent many years in Denton, North Carolina, where she became very active in the Central United Methodist Church.  She played piano by ear and loved to play hymns that she grew up singing. Ms. Futrell was a devoted mother and homemaker during her years in Denton.

Upon returning to Abingdon, Joan spent many years as the caregiver of her parents until their deaths. Since 2012, she has been a resident of Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie, Virginia, where she received excellent care.

Joan Shutters Futrell is preceded in death by her father, Howard Gilmer Shutters; mother, Katherine Vespa Shutters; brothers, Frank and Danny; and sister-in-law, Betty. She is survived by daughter, Kimberly Futrell Ford of Salisbury, North Carolina; son, Chip Futrell and son-in-law, Jim Scarborough of Wilson, North Carolina; brother Dennis Shutters and wife Dorothy (Dot) of Concord, North Carolina; Judith (Judy) Price of Lebanon, Virginia; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation with the family will be held on Saturday, September 16, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. followed by a funeral service at 2:00 p.m. at Farris Funeral Service, 427 East Main Street, Abingdon, Virginia.  Rev. Barbara Farmer will officiate. The burial will be held immediately thereafter at Forest Hills Memory Gardens, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, Virginia.
