Mrs. Joann Mullins Owens, 84, passed away on Saturday, January 30, 2010 in Valley Health Care.
She was born January 14, 1926 at "The Stone House", an Italian Renaissance home in Clintwood, VA and grew up in Dickenson County. She was a graduate of Haysi High School, where she excelled in academics and women's basketball. Joann graduated from Bluefield State Business College and worked for Clinchfield Coal Company at Splashdam. She worked during World War II at munitions factories in Ohio, and married Milton Owens, of Dickenson County, in the late 40's. They started their family in Richmond, VA and later moved to Abingdon, in 1955 where Dr. Owens began a dental practice. They also lived in Fairfax County, in the early â??60's, where Joann was instrumental in the planning of Reston, VA. Joann was a loving and caring mother, wife, daughter and sister. She will be greatly missed by all of those who knew her.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Andrew Jackson and Velva Davis Mullins; her husband, Dr. Milton Ayers Owens and her son, Michael Shay Owens.
She is survived by her son, Dr. Gregory Dean Owens of Abingdon; her daughter, Sandra Smeltzer and her husband, Stephen of Salem, VA; two grandchildren, Madolyn Smeltzer of Alamosa, Colorado and Nicholas Smeltzer of Oxford, Mississippi; her brother, Andrew Mullins and his wife, Lois of Haysi, VA; sisters, Gay Nell Sutherland of Haysi, Jackie Hendricks of Welch, WV and Paula Clodfelter and her husband, Dick of Fredericksburg, VA and a brother-in-law, Buford Owens of Wayne, Michigan. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, February 3, 2010 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Beth Yarborough officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens in Abingdon.
The family will receive friends at Farris Funeral Service from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Tuesday.
