John Christopher Peterson, 69, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 13, 2018 at his home, surrounded by his family. He was born May 23, 1948, in Los Angeles, Calif. to Abel John “AJ” and Anna Louise Peterson. As a child, John traveled throughout the country, settling in West Virginia. He served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. He was an officer in the Washington County Moose Lodge.
John’s witty personality led him to a successful career in sales for 40 years. He had a passion for WVU football and for building model ships. John will be remembered as an entertainer and a comedian.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 48 years, Patricia (Fields) Peterson; three precious children: Stephanie (Peterson) Swanson and spouse Stephen of Burlington, N.C., Christopher Peterson and spouse Teanna of Ft. Wayne, Ind., and Samantha (Peterson) LeMasters of Abingdon. John is also survived by his sisters, Joy (Peterson) Snodgrass and Melanie (Peterson) Aliff, and his brother Abel John Peterson, Jr. He was also the proud PopPop of six grandchildren.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Abel John and Anna Louise Peterson; his brother Craig Stewart Peterson, and his beloved granddaughter Catherine Ann LeMasters.
A memorial graveside service for John will be held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, February 17, 2018, at Forest Hills Memory Gardens, with military rites performed by Highlands Veterans Honor Guard. A celebration of life will follow at the Washington County Moose Lodge, 15605 Porterfield Highway, Abingdon, VA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice.
