John Franklin Sheffield, age 89, passed away on Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at Johnston Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Sheffield was born in Glade Spring, VA the son of the late Gordon C. Sheffield and Hettie Franklin Sheffield. He served our nation in the United States Army Air Corp in WWII in the European Theater and later in the Army Reserves. He retired a member of the Naval Reserves. Mr. Sheffield was a school teacher at Patrick Henry High School, an active member of Glade Spring Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School and served as a Deacon and a Trustee. He contributed to the local civic community, serving as Mayor of Glade Spring, Town Council member, and a member of the Planning Commission.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, William P. Sheffield of Glade Spring, VA and Henry M. Sheffield of Shreveport, LA; one sister, Josephine Ridgway of Glade Spring, VA; and two nephews, Edwin C. Sheffield and Michael Burnette.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ruth Gates Sheffield; five nephews, David Sheffield, James Gates, William Burnette, Alex Johnson, and Derek Patterson; twelve nieces, Brenda Estess, Debbie Iverson, Sylvia Gerlach, Pat Shelton, Karen Hudson, Louise Bryant, Rebecca Hubbard, Cindy Burnette, Sarah Snead, Sandra Horne, Susan Jones, and Cathy Gates.

Visitation with the family will be held from 12:00-2:00 p.m., Saturday, December 8, 2012 at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday at the funeral home with Pastor Dennis Blazier and Reverend David Gary officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Rose Cemetery where, David Sheffield, James Gates, William Burnette, Alex Johnson, and Derek Patterson, Jeff Cahill, and Tommy DeBusk will serve as pallbearers. Members of the Men's Bible Class at Glade Spring Baptist Church will serve as honorary pallbearers. Military Honors will be presented by Highlands Veterans Honor Guard and the Virginia National Guard.
