Abingdon, VA – John “J.C.” Crigger, age 97, passed on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at his home. J.C. was the last of eight children born to the late John G. Crigger and Elizabeth Neal Crigger. He served in the United States Marine Corps during WWII and fought at the Battle of Guadalcanal and spent time in China and Guam. J.C. was a charter member of Pleasant View United Methodist Church and owned Crigger Auto Sales. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, Cpl. Henry Crigger; wife, Justine Crigger; brothers, Ervy, Carl, and Clayborne Crigger; and sisters, Frances Crigger, Pauline Gose, Susie Miller, and Lilly Odum.
J.C. is survived by two daughters, Janie Warner and husband Guy of Abingdon, VA; Nancy Dutton and husband Ed of Abingdon, VA; four grandchildren, Elizabeth Topalu and husband Ted of Winston-Salem, NC, Catherine Miller and husband Tony of Bristol, TN, Courtney Dutton of Abingdon, VA, and Caitlynn Dutton of Abingdon, VA; three great grandchildren, Amanda Cook and husband Jake of Abingdon, VA, Brandon Eskridge of Bristol, TN, and Coleman Topalu of Winston-Salem, NC.
Visitation with the family will be held 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, May 30, 2017, at Pleasant View United Methodist Church. Funeral services will follow at 7:00 p.m. with Rev. Ralph Kidd and Rev. Barbara Farmer officiating. Committal services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday in Knollkreg Memorial Park Fred Adkins, Bob Boatwright, Jerry Crigger, John Crigger, Dickie Kiser, and Marvin Tate serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Buddy Snodgrass and Rick White. Friends attending the committal service are asked to meet at the cemetery not later than 15 minutes prior to the service.
