Abingdon, Va. John Thomas Phipps, Jr. passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, October 10, 2015. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hazel Deadmore Phipps and John T. Phipps, Sr. John was a multi-generational Abingdon-Washington County resident who loved his hometown. Many will recall long discussions with him about the history of this area. His collection of local memorabilia hung on the walls of Chick N Little in Abingdon for many years for all to enjoy. Special life events for John included playing trombone at William King High School and at Emory and Henry College and graduating from the University of Tennessee with a Master’s degree in Social Work. He was also a Korean War veteran and was active for many years in both Shriners and Kiwanis clubs. John was an avid fisherman, and he was most proud of his family. John’s survivors include his wife, Susan Burson Phipps; daughters Lee Phipps Rasnake (Tandy) and Sally Phipps, both of Abingdon; sons Tom Phipps of Bristol, Va., and Chuck Phipps (Jenny) of Herndon, Va.; grandchildren Todd Hoskins, Kelly Hoskins, Matt Rasnake, Jessica Blevins, Ryan Tipton, Grace Megan Phipps, Amanda Phipps, Jackson Phipps, and Christian Phipps; five great-grandchildren; and two step-children, Jason Burson and Colette Burson. The family would like to offer a special thank you to Caris Hospice for their loving care. A memorial gathering for family and friends will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 18, 2015, in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service.
