Joseph Day “J.D.” Mitchell, age 74, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, December 26, 2016, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born to the late Wyndom Mitchell and Margie Cumbow Mitchell on January 6, 1942, in Washington County, Va. He worked as a miner at Clinchfield Coal Co. and was a lifelong preacher. He will forever be remembered as a “Jesus Man”.
In addition to his parents, J.D. was preceded in death by his son, Tommy E. Mitchell; and 11 siblings. He is survived by his daughter, Gloria Lynn Mitchell of the home and her companion, Jay Taylor of Abingdon, Va.; sister, Martha W. Mitchell of Saltville, Va.; former spouse, Loretta Taylor Mitchell of Marion, Va.; three grandchildren: Daniel Joseph Raffeo of Sims, N.C.; Kristen Leigh Raffeo of Middlesex, N.C.; and Leeann Roberts of Rural Retreat, Va.; five great grandchildren; and special niece, Reba Mitchell Sutphin of Abingdon, Va.
Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. Friday, December 30, 2016, at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, Va. 24210. A funeral ceremony will be held at 7:00 p.m. Friday at the Forest Hills Chapel with Pastors Melvin & Betty Ruth Penland officiating. According to his wishes, J.D. will be cremated following the service.
