Joseph Grant "J.G." Lester

Glade Spring, VA – Joseph Grant “J.G.” Lester, age 85, passed away on Sunday, June 2, 2019, in Abingdon Health & Rehab Center after a brief illness.  He was born on June 22, 1933 to Ernest and Viola Lester.  J.G. was a lifelong dairy and tobacco farmer in Washington County, VA and a partner in Lester Brothers Dairy in Glade Spring since 1957.  He found great value in a hard days work, a good crop, and a smart dog.  J.G. was happiest when he was on a tractor in the field, chopping corn.  He loved to talk and never met a stranger in his life. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Martha Lester, Lucille Kelly, Agnes Lester, and Bea Mason; brother, Roland Lester; and his faithful Border Collie, Nick.  He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jo Ann Owens Lester; son, Randy (Janet) Lester; grandson, Jacob, who was his pride and joy; sisters, Ann Lester and June Lester; brothers, Fred (Peggy) Lester and Scott (Linda) Lester, all of Glade Spring, VA; and nephews, Allen (Carolyn) Kelly, Butch (Brenda) Lester, and Jason (Cristie) Lester. Visitation with the family will be held 1:00 – 1:45 p.m. Wednesday, June 5, 2019, in Old Glade Presbyterian Church.  Graveside services will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the church cemetery with Rev. Tim Byrd officiating.  Allen Kelly, Butch Lester, Jason Lester, Wayne Ratliff, Steve McCall, Harold Shockley, and Dave DeBusk will serve as pallbearers.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Old Glade Presbyterian Church Cemetery Fund in Mr. Lester’s name.  The family would like to thank Dr. William Baker for his years of care and support and the staff of Abingdon Health & Rehab Center for their excellent care and compassion during his brief stay. Those wishing to express sympathy online may do so by visiting www.farrisfuneralservice.com and signing the online guest register.
