Joseph J.D. Rose

Joseph Daniel (J.D.) Rose, age 87, passed away Friday at his home.  J.D. was born on January 21, 1936, in McClure, VA, the son of Daniel and Maggie (Rasnick) Rose.  J.D. always loved music and played guitar with the Rose Brothers and The Cumberland Mountaineers for many years.  He was also a loyal member of the Clintwood Masonic Lodge.  After a long career working in the mines, he retired from Pittston Coal Company in 1991 and moved to Abingdon, VA.

J.D. celebrated 57 years of marriage with his loving wife, Shelby (Mann) Rose, before her death in 2015.  In addition to his wife and parents, J.D. was preceded in death by his sisters, Pauline Rose, Ruby Murphy, Kathleen Murphy and Nell O’Dell, and his brother, Dewey Rose. 

J.D. is survived by his daughter, Trina Wellman and her husband, Jack, of Abingdon, his son Randy and his wife, Rebecca, of Lebanon; four grandchildren, Amber Wellman Chanaa, Ashley Huff, Samantha Crockett, and Joseph Rose; and many nieces and nephews. 

The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 16, 2023, from 2:00 pm until 3:00 pm at Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. The funeral will be held at 3:00 pm following the visitation with Pastor Joseph Green officiating. The burial will be held on Monday, April 17, 2023, at 10 am at Temple Hill Cemetery with Pastor Jeffery Wright officiating. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to gather by 9:45 am at the cemetery. Those who wish to remember J.D. may make a gift in his memory St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Pallbearers will be Jack Wellman, Joseph Garland Rose, Mike Rose, Tony Skeen. Honorary Pallbearers are Junior Anderson and Franklin Mann.
