Judy Trantham Fanis, 63, passed away on Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at Bristol Regional Medical Center.

She was born in Greeneville, TN and was the first of three daughters of Ray & Margaret Trantham. She was educated in the Greeneville public schools and went on to receive her BS from East Tennessee State University and her Masters from the University of Virginia. She was retired from teaching after over 30 years of service. She started her career as a teacher and coach at Orange County High School, Orange, VA, then continued on to Castlewood High School, John S. Battle High School where she retired from teaching, and continued her coaching career at Abingdon High School. Her life revolved around her family, friends, and church. Additionally, she enjoyed crafts, fishing, and spending time in the Outer Banks. She was a member of Pleasant View United Methodist Church, Abingdon, VA where she chaired multiple committees and participated in countless mission trips. She is preceded in death by her parents and a sister Karen Raye Trantham.

Judy is survived by her loving husband of 44 years, Richard "Whitey" Fanis; a son, Bryan Fanis and his wife Daidre of Charlotte, NC; a daughter, Erin Fanis and her boyfriend Justin Rogers of Charlotte, NC; a sister, Pamela Trantham Effler of Asheville, NC; two grandchildren, Brady and Riley Fanis; two uncles, Hal and Fay Trantham; and two aunts, Edith Harris and Geraldine Gibson all of Greeneville, TN.

A memorial service will be conducted on Saturday, May 14, 2011 at 7:30 PM at Pleasant View United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Ralph Kidd and Rev. Barbara Farmer officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:30 PM prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in honor of Judy Trantham Fanis to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to the Pleasant View United Methodist Church, Building Fund, 18416 Lee Highway, Abingdon, Virginia 24210.
