Kenneth Earl Gunther

Abingdon, VA Mr. Kenneth Earl Gunther, age 90, passed away at his residence on Friday, September 26, 2014. He was a native of Michigan and spent most of his life working there as a mechanical engineer. He and his wife moved to Abingdon in the early 1990s. Mr. Gunther was a member of Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church. His activities included participating in the Abingdon Bridge Club, attending the College for Older Adults, volunteering at Barter Theater and gardening. He was an active member of the Abingdon Newcomers Club, and many people will remember him participating in activities at the Abingdon Rec Center. Mr. Gunther was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Mae Booth Gunther; his parents, George and Grace Wassenaar Gunther; and his step-mother, Pearl Gunther. He is survived by his son, John Gunther and wife Janet of Abingdon, VA; daughter, Christine VanderWall (Robert McKenzie) of Grandville, MI; three grandchildren: Jonathan VanderWall and wife Ronda of Grandville, MI; Todd VanderWall and wife Rachel of Golden, CO; and Caroline Gunther of Hendersonville, NC; four great-grandchildren: Ty, Marley, Annelies and Willem VanderWall; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service for Kenneth Gunther will be held on Monday, September 29, 2014 at 1:00 pm at Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Tim Reynolds officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service at the church. A private inurnment ceremony will be held in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.
