Kingsport, TN – Kenneth Lee Owens, age 71, passed on Sunday, May 18, 2014, at Holston Valley Medical Center. Mr. Owens was born and raised in Grundy, VA and moved to the Tri-cities area in 1964 where he lived briefly in Bristol, VA and Abingdon, VA. He retired after 30 years of service with Sprint Phone Company and loved to fish, read, and study history. Ken was a local artist. He also enjoyed experimenting in plant propagation and hydroponics. He was of the Baptist faith and sang in the church choir and taught Sunday school for many years. Later in life, Ken enjoyed listening to Rev. Charles Stanley. His faith kept him strong and he valued his family more than his own life. He was a wonderful and faithful father, son and brother. He is preceded in death by his parents, Lonzy Delmon Owens and Pauline Owens. He leaves behind one daughter, Julia Golden of Kingsport, TN; two sons, Johnathan (Jessica) Owens of Oberland, KS and David (Carlan) Owens of Williamsburg, VA; one brother, Fred (Terry) Owens of Palm Bay, FL; two sisters, Jean Harrell and Donna Owens, both of Abingdon, VA; and five grandchildren, Ethan, Bradley, April, Emily, and Nikki. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, May 24, 2014, at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Hwy., Abingdon, VA 24210, with Dr. Bill Horner and Pastor Joe Byrd officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens where Ethan Golden, Michael Owens, Brian Alston, Daniel Harrell, Thomas Wampler, and Danny "Moe" Cloud will serve as pallbearers. Visitation with the family will be held 1:00-3:00 p.m. just prior to the service.
