Kenneth Wayne Bailey, 79, of Abingdon passed away on Tuesday, August 16, 2016. Born on October 24, 1936, he was the son of the late Gilbert Bailey and Orna Counts Bailey. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Jack Bailey; and step-mother Lois Bailey.
He grew up in Clintwood, VA, and graduated from Clintwood High School. He went on to graduate from Lynchburg College in 1959. After graduation, he taught science and coached basketball at his alma mater in Clintwood. He also worked for the family business, Bailey Coal Company.
In 1968, he became a New York Life agent associated with New York Lifes Roanoke General Office. He was a council agent for 48 years. He loved serving his clients and regularly earned company recognition, including Chairmans Council and Annuity Champion. He was a lifetime member of the Million Dollar Round Table and an elected member of New York Lifes Agent Advisory Council. He spoke at numerous Executive Council meetings and career conferences. He also shared his expertise through various articles in the companys national magazine, The NYLIC Review. He was also the New York Lifes Roanoke General Office Man of the Year numerous times.
He was a devoted member of Abingdon Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and chairman of deacons, and a member of the financial committee. He was also a long-time member of the Kiwanis Club of Abingdon, Abingdon Masonic Lodge No. 48 and the Kazim Shriners Club of Roanoke. Previously, he served as president of Glenrochie Country Club in Abingdon. He was an avid sports fan, especially of the University of Tennessee, Virginia Tech and William Mary. He was also a long-time supporter of Abingdon High School and Clintwood High School athletics, but his greatest joy was his family. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived and will be greatly missed by his wife of 59 years, Rita. He is also survived by his daughter Tami and son-in-law Skip Bailey of Abingdon; daughter Melissa Bailey of Abingdon; grandson Chase Bailey and wife Natalie of Charlotte, N.C.; grandson Tyler Bailey of Chattanooga, Tenn.; grandson Blake Hogston (Lauren), and great-granddaughter Madison Hogston of Charlottesville, Va.; step-sister Kyleen and husband Mack Hilton of Radford, Va.; and sister-in-law Margaret Bailey of Lebanon, Va.
A celebration of Kenneth Baileys life will be conducted at 6 p.m. on Friday, August 19, at Abingdon Baptist Church, with the Rev. Steve Pollard officiating. Masonic rites will be conducted by Abingdon Lodge #48 following the service. The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service from 4-6 p.m. Pallbearers will be Chase Bailey, Skip Bailey, Tyler Bailey, Blake Hogston, Dr. Ron Ely and George Strong. Honorary pallbearers are the deacons of Abingdon Baptist Church, members of the Kiwanis Club of Abingdon and fellow agents of New York Lifes Roanoke General Office. Private graveside services will be held at Forest Hills Memory Gardens.
