Lonnie D. Nunley, Jr.

d. June 20, 2017

Lonnie "LD" D. Nunley Jr., passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 20, 2017, at age 90, after a short illness. LD was predeceased by the love of his live, his wife, Janet, who passed away in November, 2016.

LD is survived by a daughter, Susan; a son, Lonnie "Chip" D. Nunley III; a daughter-in-law, Helen; and three grandchildren, Cara, Liz and Lon (Lonnie D. Nunley, IV).

LD was born in Abingdon, Virginia on August 5, 1926. LD was a member of the Greatest Generation, although, given his modesty, he would never stake that claim for himself. His early years were indelibly marked by the Great Depression, and owing to his experiences during that dark time, he carried a life-long aversion to debt and extravagance of any kind. He graduated from William King High School in Abingdon at the height of World War II, and immediately joined the United States Navy, serving proudly as a gunner’s mate (albeit at the cost of his hearing) on the battleship USS Nevada.

After the war, LD returned to Southwest Virginia and studied at Emory & Henry College and Steed Business College, where he met Janet. He worked the majority of his life for Associated Transport in Bristol. LD was a life-long member of State Street United Methodist Church, and a faithful participant in the Men’s Sunday School Class. LD always made time for his family, rarely raised his voice and never spoke ill of other people. He was a kind and gentle soul.

LD had two great loves, his family, and especially his wife, Janet, and his farm. LD and Janet made for a compelling love story, very different personalities, Janet being the spark in any room and LD being very reticent, but together forging a strong bond that kept them devoted to each other, and delighting in each other’s company for over 66 years. LD loved “piddling” on his farm in Holston, Virginia, enjoying the pleasure of physical labor in the open air. Spending time together at the farm, and entertaining family and friends there, became the defining pleasures of Janet’s and LD’s golden years.

LD’s family would like to express their deep gratitude to the staff of Commonwealth Assisted Living in Abingdon, where LD lived in recent years, and especially for their care and attention to LD in recent days.

Burial will be at 9 a.m., Monday, June 26, 2017, at Knollkreg Memorial Park in Abingdon, followed by a memorial service at 10 a.m. at State Street United Methodist Church in Bristol. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made in LD’s memory to either State Street United Methodist Church or Emory and Henry College.
