Louella Hawkins Woodward

Louella Hawkins Woodward, of Abingdon, Va., died on Saturday, April 22, 2017, at her home.
She was born in Washington County, Va., the daughter of the late W.B. Hawkins and Una Fraley Hawkins.

She received her education at Greendale High School; Emory and Henry College; Radford University; Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Md.; Columbia University, New York, N.Y.; and the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wis.

Beginning her educational career in her native state of Virginia, she taught various subjects in the high schools of Radford, Christiansburg, and Waynesboro before moving to Baltimore, Md. in 1945. In Baltimore, she continued as a high school teacher, as well as a Teacher of Practice, for six years until she became a supervisor at the Board of Education. In this capacity, she also served as a supervisor for interns in the Master of Arts in Teaching Program at the Johns Hopkins University. While serving as supervisor in 1958, she was selected as a Master Teacher for the summer school program for interns in the Master of Arts in Teaching at Harvard University. In 1967 she joined the staff of the Maryland State Department of Education in the Division of Instruction as a Specialist in Curriculum. Over a ten-year period, she taught evening classes in Supervision and in Curriculum in the School for Professional Studies in Business and Education at the Johns Hopkins University.

In 1976 she retired from the Maryland State Department of Education from which she received a Certificate of Appreciation. Also, she received a Certificate of Distinguished Citizenship from the Governor of Maryland.

Upon her retirement, she returned to Abingdon, and again became a member of the Carvosso United Methodist Church which she had also attended during he r early years. At the church she taught Sunday School for a number of years, chaired the official Administrative Council for several terms, and served her church in many other varied capacities.

She was also a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International and the Pi Lambda Theta International Honor Society and Professional Association in Education.

In addition to her parents, Louella was also preceded in death by her brother, Lemuel K. Hawkins, husband, William H. Woodward; and three sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Hawkins, Maxine Woodward, and Beatrice Cox. She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, 2017, in the mausoleum of Knollkreg Memorial Park with the Rev. Leonard Smith and Pastor Bill Breeding officiating. The Men of Carvosso United Methodist Church will serve as honorary pallbearers.
