Lucy Virginia Self Houser, age 94, of Bristol, Va., went to be with the Lord on Monday, March 18, 2019, at her home. She was born to the late William Anthony “Bill” Self and Frances Sexton Self on October 9, 1924. She will be remembered as a wonderful mother to 13 children who was a skilled gardener and cook.
Lucy was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Martin Lillard Houser, Sr.; son, Cecil Houser; three brothers, Roy, Charlie, and Ralph Self; sister, Dorothy Vicars; and three grandchildren, Alan Houser, Tommy Hurd, and Chuck Houser.
She is survived by five sons: Walter Houser and wife, Nadean; George Houser and wife, Judy; Billy Houser; and Martin “J.R.” Houser, Jr., all of Bristol, Va., and Richard Houser of Bristol, Tenn.; seven daughters: Ann Cox and husband, Don, and Betty Hurd and husband, Steve, all of Bristol, Tenn., and Eula Murray, Eva Shaffer and husband, Joe; Lila Worley, Donna Browning, and Lynda Felty, all of Bristol, Va.; brother, Jay Self and wife, Joyce, of Abingdon, Va.; 24 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral ceremony will be held on Thursday, March 21, 2019, at 7:00 p.m. at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Jason Pickle officiating. A committal service will be held on Friday, March 22, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. at Rust Hollow Cemetery where pallbearers will be selected from grandsons. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the funeral.
