M. Cybil Britton of Emory, Va. died peacefully in her home with her family gathered around her on Tuesday, May 21, 2013. She was 77. Born Mary Barbara Britton in Chicago on April 25, 1936, she was the youngest of four children. She grew up in Washington, D.C. since high school age and attended Loyola College in Baltimore. She worked as a nurse in several Baltimore hospitals, achieved her Masters in Science, and was a Clinical Specialist in Psychology. She worked as a director of nursing in three different institutions and retired from Perkins State Hospital in 1992.
She and her husband, Gene Denton, together for 39 years, have been retired for 20 years and have done a lot of traveling including by sail boat. They moved back to his boyhood home in Emory, Va. in 2007 where she was very active in volunteer work in the community. Cybil practiced her counseling skills at Faith In Action, the Department of Social Services, and CASA. She also had private clients who wanted to improve their lives. She had a radio show at the Emory & Henry College radio station called "Systems Issues" in which she explained the psychotherapy method she used, Bowen Family Systems Theory. She belonged to the Emory College Community Club. Cybil loved to entertain and had many gatherings at her home. The Garden Party each summer and the Black-Eyed-Pea party on January 1st were annual events.
Cybil is survived by her husband, Gene Denton, and her brother Keith Britton. She is also survived by six children; Francis Bien, Melanie Bien, Monica Bien, Keith L. Bien, Becky E. Denton, and William F. Denton; and five grandchildren, Zoe Bien, Jackie Denton, Jenny Denton, Jordan Denton, and Silas Bien. She was predeceased by her parents, Lewis W. Britton and Elsa Poull Britton; her brother, Lewis W. Britton, Jr.; and her sister, Cynthia M. Britton.
A graveside memorial gathering is planned for 2:00 p.m., Sunday, May 26, 2013 at the Holston Conference Cemetery; Emory, Va. There will be no formal service but anyone whose life has been touched by Cybil will be welcomed to say a few words. An after-party will be at the Denton-Britton home immediately following. Dress is casual.
